Latvian Association of Breastfeeding Promotion Consultants

The Association of Latvian Breastfeeding Promotion Consultants (LZVKA) was founded on March 28, 2011.

The adult non-formal education institution “Learning Center ZIDIT.LV” is an educational institution founded by the Association of Latvian Breastfeeding Promotion Consultants, which provides non-formal education opportunities for adults.

- Association goals

The aim of the Association is to improve public health by increasing the number of children in Latvia who are breastfed.

To achieve its aim, the Association:

  • Creates awareness of the role of breastfeeding promotion, support and protection in families, society, professionals and policy makers in the sector

  • Cooperates with state and local government healthcare institutions, non-governmental organizations and specialists in promoting family health and breastfeeding

  • Cooperates with other similar organizations in Latvia and outside Latvia to exchange experience, improve the qualifications of specialists and promote, support and protect breastfeeding, and participates in the work of international professional associations.

  • Provides information and recommendations to the legislative and executive authorities of the Republic of Latvia, as well as to non-governmental organizations

  • Promotes cooperation between representatives of different professions, specialties and sectors to achieve common goals and tasks

  • Prepares, translates, publishes informational and educational materials, creates and maintains electronic informational resources

  • Participates in the development and implementation of various public health programs

  • Promotes, organizes and carries out research in the field of breastfeeding promotion, support and protection, as well as on the quality, marketing and advertising of breast milk substitutes

  • Trains breastfeeding counselors and provides them with informational support

  • Advises new parents on breastfeeding issues, trains expectant mothers, provides support to parents on child care and upbringing issues

  • Creates psychological support groups for expectant and new mothers, parents and collaborates with mothers' support groups and similar organizations

  • Takes care of the professional training of its members, organizes and implements further educational programs; organizes conferences, seminars and other educational events

  • Organizes legal protection for its members, as well as applies liability in case of lack of professional competence
